The Maryada Purushottam

Many of you would have watched the Hindi classic 'Awaara' made in 1951. A reputed magistrate abandons his pregnant wife because she was earlier abducted by a dacoit and if he doesn't do so, his reputation is at stake. He although loves his wife, despite being as powerful as a magistrate doesn't have moral courage to defend her in front of the orthodox society. 

The movie conveys two important messages:
1) Our society believes that it's the woman who has to be punished for sexual offence, even if it involves her 'rape'.
2) The men in our society don't have guts to oppose this notion of society, even if it costs their beloved. The reputation in this sick society is more important to men than love. 

The character of magistrate is ultimately depicted in negative shade, responsible for creating many evils in society.
Now, I hope that most of you are familiar with a similar story, far much older than this one, in fact so much popular that it's believed to be true by a lot of people. The same kind of events happened there too; there was also the jurisprudence of a 'magistrate' tested. And he too showed the same 'lack of moral courage'. For the magistrate, rather than proving the truth and changing the mind of his people, proving his 'solidarity' with people of that 'social mindset' was of higher priority. Lust for reputation in society again won over justice and love. The man made a 'sacrifice' by leaving the lady in forest, all as a reward for her life-long dedication.
And what more, later he went further down and got the lady tested for 'being not raped' by making her pass through fire.
These are the stories of two 'patriarchal', 'honour-hungry' and 'morally weak' powerful men in our society. The one character has been decried; but the other, ironically, has been worshiped for thousands of years and is still been and is considered an icon of morality.

वातावरण प्रदूषित है

वातावरण प्रदूषित है।
इसे ग्लोबल वार्मिंग भी कह सकते हो, और कॉन्सन्स डेफनिंग भी।
पर चुनौती है यह हमारे अस्तित्व को।
एक चेतावनी है कि हम 'सभ्य' नहीं हुए हैं,
बल्कि अपने कपड़े मात्र बदल लिए हैं।
अभी भी हमारे जनमानस का पुरुषार्थ
नहीं निकल पाया है रोटी, सैक्स और वंश बढ़ाने की पुरातन कन्दराओं से।
आर्थिक विकास की दौड़ में हम अनभिज्ञ हैं अपने हाथों के दिन दूने रात चौगुने बढ़ते नाखूनों से।
मानव-जीवन की सफलता जीतने या पूजने से कब तक परिभाषित होगी?
सुख की परिभाषा कब तक आत्म-प्रवंचना पर अवलम्बित होगी?
शान्ति का मूल्य कब तक मानव-अस्मिता का दमन होगा?

धरती, हवा, आकाश सबके अधिनायक,
मत भूलना कि तुम्हारा तन्त्रजाल महज एक समझौता है,
जो कभी भी तोड़ा जा सकता है।
एक मनुष्य की अस्मिता व चेतना
दुनिया के किसी भी कानून या किताब से कहीं बढ़कर है।
तुम हमें रोटी न दे सको, न सही;
हमारी हवा और सोच से खेलने का अधिकार मैं तुम्हें नहीं देता हूँ।

वातावरण प्रदूषित है।
पर यह तुमको नहीं दिखेगा, क्योंकि तुमको आज में जीना सिखाया गया है।
और आज में कभी कोई प्रदूषण नहीं होता है।
आज एक बच्चे की तरह निर्दोष होता है।
आज में जीते रहना आवश्यक है,
तुम्हारे 'सुख' के लिए, और समाज की 'शान्ति' के लिए।
आज की दुनिया में स्वप्न, स्मृति, आदर्श जैसी दकियानूसी अवधारणाएँ नहीं होती हैं।
छोड़ो इन बातों को उनके लिए जो इन चूहे-बिल्ली के खेलों में हमेशा फिसड्डी रहे हैं।
जिनके शब्दकोश में 'बिकना' अभी भी एक घृणित शब्द है;
और जिनके लिए 'सत्य', 'क्रान्ति' और 'सुख' में एक गहरा तालमेल है।
तुम तो इतना ही समझ जाओ तो बहुत है, कि
वातावरण प्रदूषित है।
